Canadian Jesuits International (CJI) is an apostolate of the Jesuits in English Canada which seeks to live out the mission of the Society of Jesus: to serve faith and to promote the justice of God’s kingdom, in dialogue with cultures and religion. (GC 34, Decree 2, Servants of Christ’s Mission.)
The desire to work with those on the margins leads us to seek the global dimension of all social justice issues. As General Congregation 35 stated, “Serving Christ’s mission today means paying attention to its global context.” (Decree 2, A Fire That Kindles Other Fires, n20).

With deep roots in the work of the first Canadian Jesuits who over 60 years ago went as missionaries first to India, and then Zambia and Jamaica, Canadian Jesuits International today supports poor and marginalized peoples struggling for social justice and dignity in developing countries. It also carries out educational advocacy in Canada, linked with its overseas work.
CJI presently works with Jesuit and other partners rooted in the Jesuit tradition in Asia, Africa, Latin America, Europe and the Caribbean. It supports projects in the following areas: education, pastoral care, social services, community development, agriculture, humanitarian assistance, peace-building, human rights, gender equity, children’s rights and economic justice.

CJI’s educational advocacy draws upon an extensive network of Jesuit and other partners around the world to raise Canadians’ awareness of the struggles and aspirations of people in the developing world.
Today more than ever “mission” is understood as solidarity and reciprocity. The new frontiers call for a redefinition of who we are and what we do. Today we speak of mission as encounter – an encounter among equals, where we all have a voice, and together we make our own the call of GC35 to reconciliation with God with one another and with creation so that we can build “another world” of justice, development and equal opportunities.
