Biographical Dictionary
Translator's Preface

This Biographical Dictionary is derived from the "Notices Biographiques" found in the eight published volumes of Lucien Campeau's Monumenta Novae Franciae [MNF]. As such, the Dictionary, therefore, contains the names of people who in one way or another are associated with the Jesuit Mission efforts in the early Seventeenth Century. Specifically, the period covered is 1602 to 1654, beginning with the mission at Port Royal in Acadia from 1611 to 1613 and ending with the post-Huronia period up to 1654. It is hoped that this coverage will be of especial interest to readers of events in the first half of the seventeenth century in New France, especially those events associated with the Jesuit missions. Dates are in the context of the Gregorian calendar unless otherwise indicated.

Translation of the "Sketches" was begun by Fr. George Topp, S.J. and completed by the undersigned. In general, the translation is fairly close to the original French, with due regard for producing an easily readable English version. Occasionally, a word or two were added to clarify a passage -- these additions are usually put inside square brackets. The spelling of names follows the original volumes, even for most places-names, such as Trois-Rivières rather than Three Rivers; but Londres becomes London. Personal names keep the same spelling as found in Campeau's texts. There is some variability in these names; rather than attempt any harmonization of spelling, we simply repeat the spelling as found in the French texts. Names of tribes, however, are expressed by their English equivalent, except that North American English usage seems to favor Algonquin rather than Algonkin.

Acknowledgments: Many thanks to the co-publishers of the original volumes of the Monumenta Novae Franciae for permission to publish an English translation of the "Notices Biographiques" found in those volumes. To Frs. William Addley, S.J., former Provincial, and Jacques Monet, S.J. Director of the Institute of Jesuit Studies, Toronto, for providing secretarial help to Fr. Topp in the early stages of the project. To Mr. J. Hunter of the Huronia Museum in Midland, Ontario for initially encouraging Fr. Topp to undertake the translations. Finally, many thanks to Mr. Robert Schultz of Mt. Uniacke, Nova Scotia, as well as to Françoise and Gontran Trottier of Port Royal, Nova Scotia, for generously reading and offering suggestions for the "sketches" pertaining to Volume I of the Monumenta.
