Jack Costello, S.J., appeared on TVO’s program The Agenda with host Steve Paikin, on January 27. The half-hour interview was called “Religion in the Rubble” and focused on Haiti and questions about faith after natural disasters strike.

The Provincial Superiors of English and French Canada announced the appointment of Jack Costello as National Director of Jesuit Refugee Service Canada for a three-year period starting January 2010.
Lloyd Baugh gave a paper entitled, “Mysterium tremendum, medium fascinans: Dio nel cinema,” at the Fifth Annual International Conference “L’Anima nel arte,” [“The Spiritual in Art”], held at the Byzantine Abbey of San Nilo in Grottaferrata (Roma), November 3.
Lloyd Baugh also has an article published in the current issue of the Gregorian University’s theological/philosophical journal, Gregorianum, entitled “The Search for Meaning, the Struggle to Love: Ang Lee’s Film Brokeback Mountain” [vol. 90, num. 3 (2009), pp. 533-570].

On October 20, Lloyd Baugh, S.J., gave a paper at Rome’s Universita’ Pontificia Salesiana — “Imaging the Image of God: Theological and Esthetic Strategies in the Jesus Films” — during an Ecumenical Seminar organized by the Salesians’ Faculty of Social Communications, and entitled “Dire Dio nel cinema: Un dialogo interreligioso” [“Narrating God in Film: An Interreligious Dialogue”]. He also moderated the round-table discussion among Muslim, Jewish and Christian scholars and filmmakers that concluded the day-long event.
Bill Ryan, S.J., will participate in a small international conference, organized by the Jesuit Social Justice Secretariat in Rome and the Jesuit European Office [OCIPE] in Brussels, November 23-26, on the International Economic and Financial Crisis. The participants, Jesuits and associates, are from academia, social justice centres, etc. The crisis will be studied and discerned from the perpectives of social science and the new social encyclical Caritas in Veritate.
The November 15, issue of The Catholic Register features an op-ed piece by Michael Czerny, S.J., entitled “May we hear the voices of our African brethren,” on page 19.

The October 2 issue of The Catholic Register features an article entitled “Jesuits put vow of poverty into action,” on Provincial Jim Webb, S.J., and Socius Peter Bisson, S.J., and their decision to move to an apartment in St. James Town, one of the poorest Toronto neighbourhoods.
Mauricio Palacio’s essay on migration, “Les murs de la peur,” (The Walls of Fear), published in Aujourd’hui Credo, received an honourable mention in the category “Features (magazine)” of the Canadian Church Press awards for 2009.

The University of Toronto Press has just published “The Triune God: Doctrines,” translated from Fr. Bernard Lonergan’s 1964 Latin work, by Michael Shields, S.J. and edited by Robert Doran and Daniel Monsour. This is the fifteenth volume of the Collected Works of Bernard Lonergan published so far. It is a companion volume to “The Triune God: Systematics,” which came out in 2007. The two together comprise virtually the entire corpus of Fr. Lonergan’s writings on the Trinity.
The Catholic Register ran a piece by Michael Czerny, S.J., entitled “Papal encyclical tells us to ‘Think!’ and ‘Love!’” in their August 9-16 edition. The piece tells us how the new encyclical “Caritas in Veritate” might be important for Africans and Canadians.
The August 9 - 26 issue of The Catholic Register also features writer Lisa Petsche’s article “Recognizing God in Nature,” where she talks about a workshop she attended in which Jim Profit, S.J., spoke about finding God in Creation.

New Faces of Canadian Catholics: The Asians, a new book by Terence Fay, S.J., was published by Novalis. The book focuses on five of the largest Asian Catholic communities in Canada and how these communities are putting down roots in the Catholic Church and Canadian society.
The Lenten fast of John McCarthy, S.J., continues to make news. Recently an article about John’s fast and work with the environment was published in the Atlantic Salmon Journal, Summer 2009 issue.
Philip Shano, S.J., has an article in the latest issue of Review for Religious. The 68.3 issue of 2009 includes an article on the “Communal Examen.”

Rob Allore, S.J., Jacques Monet, S.J., and Jonathan Stott, S.J., were interviewed on Salt & Light TV’s Catholic Focus program regarding the film Angels & Demons. They explored the history and art behind the film’s story, and the relationship between faith and science.
Len Altilia, S.J., was quoted in The Catholic Register, May 8 story on education entitled “Ranking Ontario schools misses point of existence.”
Alex Kirsten, S.J., and Jacques Monet, S.J., are quoted in The Catholic Register, June 26 story on Canada’s saints and blesseds entitled “Catholic Church part of Canada’s founding myth.”
On May 28, Jim Profit, S.J., was awarded the Award of Merit from the Wellington Ontario English Catholic Teachers’ Association, (OECTA). The award is given to a community member who supports Catholic education in the Guelph-Wellington area. While many priests have received the award, Jim was the first Jesuit to be presented with the honour.
“Vatican Two in Canada: A Colloquium,” sponsored by Universite Laval, St. Paul University, and the University of St Michael’s College, took place at St. Michael’s campus on May 4-6. Terence J. Fay, S.J. presented a paper on “Asian Canadian Catholics: A New Model for the Canadian Church?” His paper was among 15 presented by Michael Fahey, S.J., Fr. Gilles Routhier, Jerry Skira, Alan Hayes, and others. The Colloquium will continue at St. Paul University in Ottawa October 15 -17.
On April 28, John Meehan, S.J., gave a presentation to the International Baccalaureate students at Brebeuf College, Montréal on the history of Jesuits and inculturation in China entitled, “Un accommodement raisonnable? Les jesuites et la question des rites chinois, 1600-1939.” He also gave two talks at events marking the 80th anniversary of Canada’s relations with Japan, one at the Munk Centre, University of Toronto, the other on diplomat-scholars in Canadian external affairs at the National Library, Ottawa.
Beatitudes for the Workplace, a new book by Max Oliva, S.J., has just been published by Novalis. Using the Beatitudes of Jesus as a framework, Oliva explores eight virtues: wisdom, integrity, honesty, compassion for others, justice for the earth, forgiveness, generosity, and courage. Readers will find hope for their work-faith journey and encouragement to live a blessed life.
Jacques Monet, S.J. and Rob Allore, S.J., were recently interviewed by The National Post. Jacques for the Pope’s recent visit to the Holy Land, in an article dated May 8 and Rob for a May 15 article on the film Angels & Demons. Both articles may be found at www.nationalpost.com.

Michael Knox, S.J., presented a paper entitled the Cosmic Bodies of Christian Witness: a reflection on the ancient Crowns of Martyrdom, and the modern world of faith to a faculty seminar at Campion College, Regina, on February 13.
Vision TV will present the Annual National Catholic Mission on April 6 - 7 at 9:00 p.m. and 11:00 p.m. ET. Brian Massie, S.J., will be featured in the April 7 segment alongside David Wells, Religious Education Director for the Diocese of Plymouth in England. They will talk about finding God in daily life - in memory, in the here and now, and in the ordinary. The entire broadcast will also be available for streaming online at www.visiontv.ca.
The March 18 issue of the Prairie Messenger features an article entitled Media literacy is important by reporter Maureen Weber. The article refers to Monty Williams. S.J., and John Pungente, S.J., and the book Finding God in the Dark.
Len Altilia, S.J., spoke at a parish mission at St. Wilfrid’s in north Toronto from March 22 - 24.
Erik Oland, S.J., had an article published in the French language review on religious life En Son Nom (Vol. 67 No. 2 March-April 2009 issue). The subject is the new novitiate project and its relation to GC 35. The title is Dépasser ses propres frontières.

Lloyd Baugh, S.J., has published an article in The Australian Religious Studies Review: “Re-visiting Denys Arcand’s Jesus of Montréal (1989): Metatextuality, Metaphor, Hermeneutics and Resurrection,” ARSR, vol. 21, num. 3 (2008): pp. 277-297.
Peter Bisson, S.J., has published an article in the Social Justice Secretariat’s Promotio Justitiae, n. 100, 2008/3: “GC 35: A Postmodern Faith-Justice Mission?” It was written with Gaspar LoBiondo of the Woodstock Theological Center in Washington, DC.
John Meehan, S.J., gave a paper entitled “Religion, Trade and the Flag: Canadians in Shanghai, 1850-1950” at a conference of the Canadian Asian Studies Association at St. Jerome’s College, University of Waterloo, on November 15, 2008. A month later, he joined ten other historians invited to speak on key figures in Canadian foreign policy to mark the 100th anniversary of the Department of Foreign Affairs and International Trade. Addressed to the diplomatic corps, the lecture was entitled “Canada’s Pacific Debut: Herbert Marler and the Tokyo Legation, 1929-1936” and is due to appear in a forthcoming book.
Terry Fay, S.J., is departing the University of St. Michael’s College this month for Ateneo de Manila University in the Philippines. There he will launch a research project on the reception of the Second Vatican Council by Asians. When the research is completed, he will travel to Fu Jen University in Taipei, Taiwan, to continue the project with the Taiwanese. Following this, he will travel to Sogang University in Seoul, Korea, for further research. When he returns to Canada, he will present a paper on his findings at the conference on the Second Vatican Council at several universities, including Laval, St. Paul University and St. Michael’s College at the University of Toronto.

Sami Helewa, S.J., gave a talk on Mary in Islam at the Catholic Chaplaincy, University of Glasgow, on November 20.
For the recent Synod of Bishops on The Word of God in the Life and Mission of the Church, in Rome, the Catholic News Service (CNS), set up a reflections blog on the Bible. Michael Kolarcik, S.J., took part. Scott M. Lewis, S.J., was also asked to participate.
Lloyd Baugh, S.J., gave a paper — “Le attualizzazioni filmiche di Gesu’ e del Vangelo: La storia, i limiti, le possibilita’ e il recente film sudafricano, Son of Man”— at the Annual International Convention “L’anima nell’Arte V,” at the Abbey of San Nilo, Grottaferrata (Rome), on December 5.

John McCarthy, S.J., was interviewed on CBC Radio One on October 31, regarding the Mercy Centre for Ecology and Justice interdenominational conference on “Creation Spirituality,” held in Newfoundland at the beginning of November. He was also one of the keynote speakers at the Canadian Network for Environmental Education and Communication (EECOM) conference at Gros Morne National Park in Newfoundland.
Lloyd Baugh, S.J., gave a paper entitled “L’inculturazione del Vangelo nel cinema: Il Gesu’ africano di Son of Man” at the Annual International Convention of the Giustizia e Solidarietà Foundation in Rome on October 29.

Joseph Plevnik, S.J., has just published Evangelij po Mateju, (Ljubljana: upnijski zavod Dravlje, 2008). This book in Slovenian on the Gospel of Matthew follows three other New Testament publications in his native language, on Paul (2004), on Mark (2005), and on Luke (2008).
Philip Shano, S.J., had two short articles published in the past month. “Midnight Prayer in the Ignatian Exercises” appeared in the July 2008, (67.3) issue of Review for Religious. An earlier-published article (“Repose Days During the Ignatian Exercises”) appeared in Sharing the Spiritual Exercises of St. Ignatius, a collection of articles on the Exercises, edited by David Fleming, S.J.

David Creamer, S.J., has worked on a project for his Catholic Studies 2100 Field Course entitled “Catholic Heritage and Culture: Italy.” Fr. Creamer, aided by student Matthew Hendzel, has created a learning resource for students in this field course using a wiki. The resource can be seen at: http://ltc.umanitoba.ca/beeonthebaseboard. Fr. Creamer has used a 21st century technology (wiki) to provide a glimpse into 17th century Italy, a time when power, prominence, wealth and influence was wielded by the aristocracy and the Catholic Church. Many prominent families had their own ‘logos’ - family coats of arms or crests - which adorned their palaces and possessions and signalled to all, the wealth and power of the family. Fr. Creamer would like future students to continue to contribute to the resource and grow it over time. The resource was created using free open source Mediawiki software - the same software behind Wikipedia - and was supported by the Learning Technologies Centre.

Desmond Buhagar, SJ, will be presenting a paper at St. Paul University at the annual conference of the Society for Pastoral Counselling Research (SPCR) in Ottawa on Friday, May 2 at 2:00 p.m. The title of the conference is: Families Today: Resilience and Spirituality. The paper is entitled: “Doing Culturally Sensitive Assessments with Immigrant Populations: An Intergenerational and Pastoral Approach to Resilience.”

February 1st and 8th Lloyd Baugh gave 2 lectures at Heythrop College, University of London: The God of Agnosticism in Kieslowski's Film, "Decalogue One" and The God of Philosophy in Kieslowski's "Decalogue Eight." On 6 February, he conducted a "Faculty Research Seminar" at Heythrop College on the topic: Metatextuality as a Hermeneutic for Pier Paolo Pasolini's Film, "La ricotta."

Lloyd Baugh gave two papers at the Congreso Internacional sobre Teología y Cine: "El Dio de los Cineastas," held at the Facultat de Teología de Catalunya in Barcelona: on 15 November, the keynote address of the Convention, "Claves para una lectura teológica del cine;" on 16 November, "El uso de textos fílmicos en los Ejercicios Espirituales: Teoría y Praxis." On 22 November, at Grottaferrata near Rome, Lloyd gave a paper - "Religione, spiritualità e teologia nel cinema recente" - at the "IV Convegno Internazionale: 'L'Anima nell'Arte,'" held in the Abbey of San Nilo.
Eric Jensen just published a book, Entering Christ's Prayer (Ave Maria Press,) an eight-day retreat which presents Jesus as a contemplative in action.
The Lonergan Research Institute announces the publication of Shorter Papers, Volume 20 of the Collected Works of Bernard Lonergan. The editors of this volume are Bob Croken, Bob Doran, and Danny Monsour. While the title may seem prosaic, still it is accurate as the volume contains seventy-four Papers, spanning Lonergan's life from his years in Philosophy at Heythrop College to 1980, four years before his death. The largest number of entries are Book Reviews by Lonergan of other authors' books. This is the fourteenth volume of a projected twenty-five in the Collected Works series, published by the University of Toronto Press.

Lloyd Baugh has had an article published on Pier Paolo Pasolini - "The Masterpiece: The Gospel According to Saint Matthew" - in The Religion and Film Reader, edited by Jolyon Mitchell and S. Brent Plate, New York: Routledge, 2007, pp. 203-207. On October 30, Lloyd gave a paper -- "La chiesa e l'anticlericalismo nel nuovo film 'I Vicerè' di Roberto Faenza" -- at the Conference, "'I Vicerè:' Impietosa autobiografia di una nazione," at the University of Rome "La Sapienza"/Faculty of Communications, and on 9 November, he gave a paper at the Gregorian University during the Symposium: "Comunicazione, cultura e teologia: Una mediazione interdisciplinare." The paper was entitled: "Una comunicazione teologica, una teologia comunicativa."
On October 16, Ignatius Jesuit Centre received the Watershed award from the Grand River Conservation Authority, given for the responsible care of their land which is a part of the Grand River watershed.
On October 21, Jim Profit received the St. Francis award from St. James the Apostle (Anglican) Church in Guelph, which is given each year to someone in the community addressing ecology issues.
