Terence Fay, S.J., presented two keynote addresses to the annual Chinese North American Conference which met in Toronto this year. Three to five hundred Chinese Canadians and Americans gathered at St. Agnes Kouying Tsao Church in Markham for talks on Chinese Catholics integrating into the North American culture. Terry spoke on the “Chinese Canadian Search for Integration” and on five stories of Chinese Canadian Catholics seeking transcendence in multicultural Toronto.

Len Altilia, S.J., participated in the Youth Rally of the Office of Catholic Youth, Archdiocese of Toronto, at Martyrs’ Shrine from July 23 -25. On Friday and Saturday, Len provided input for a self-directed retreat for adult leaders. This consisted of sessions, one Friday evening, and one on Saturday morning, while the catechesis sessions for the youth were going on. A final session was held on Saturday afternoon to review the experience and explore the theme more deeply. The overall theme for the weekend for the youth was “Follow Me,” and this provided the structure for the retreat for the adults. In addition to this, Len participated with other members of the Toronto Area Vocation Directors Association in a vocation fair that took place on Saturday afternoon. TAVDA members were invited to bring their vocation displays and be available to speak to the youth over a period of several hours. Pope Benedict XVl has appointed two senior clerics, one being Ottawa Archbishop Terrence Prendergast, S.J., to examine the abuse cases in Ireland this fall. Articles about this ran in the Canadian press. Bishop Prendergast was also mentioned extensively after a press conference at the end of May with Cardinal Marc Ouellet, regarding the Cardinal’s recent comments on abortion. Fr. Terence J. Fay, S.J., conducted a Symposium for the Faculty of the University of St. Michael’s College on March 18 entitled “Asian Catholics and their Integration into the Canadian Church.” Terry was the organizer of and participant in a “Panel Dialogue on Oral Narrative: The Raw Material of Canadian History,” at the Canadian Catholic Historical Association Conference at Concordia University on May 31 as part of the Congress of the Canadian Federation of the Humanities and Social Sciences. Between 300 and 500 Chinese Canadians, Americans, and from elsewhere are expected to attend Terry Fay’s two keynote talks, “The Search for Integration” and “Seeking Transcendence in Multicultural Toronto” for the 30th North America Chinese Clergy, Religious, and Laity Convention on June 26 at Chinese Martyrs’ Catholic Church, Markham, ON.

Fr. Len Altilia, S.J., appeard on a ListenUP TV panel entitled “A Church in Crisis,” regarding the recent sex scandal and the Church. The show aired on May 16 and may be viewed at www.listenuptv.com.
On May 1, Fr. Lloyd Baugh, S.J., directed an adapted version of the workshop for priests he had offered to bishops and priests of Civita’ Castellana in March, this time for the priests and scholastics of the International House of Studies of the Missionari Oblati di Maria Immacolata (OMI) in Rome: lecture, sessions of film-clips, screening of a film, small group work and final session. For this group, which included several Canadians, and priests and scholastics preparing for missionary work, he screened the Jesuits-in-New-France film, “Black Robe” by Bruce Beresford (1991).
The Ottawa Citizen ran a priece on May 23 entitled “Archbishop helps Orléans parish mark 150 years - Going back to 1860,” in which Archbishop Terrence Prendergast, was featured. Many people who took part in the festivities retracing the routes of Ottawa’s first bishop, Joseph Guigues, wore period costumes. Fr. Peter Bisson, S.J., has an article: “Spiritual Conversation and Social Justice”, in the latest number of the Review of Ignatian Spirituality, n. 123, xli.1, 2010, from the Secretariat of Ignatian Spirituality, Rome.
This year’s theme for the Lenten Sermon Series at the Anglican Cathedral of St. James in Toronto was “Priestly Poets” and featured Deacon John Meehan, S.J., lecturing on poet Gerard Manley Hopkins, S.J., on March 21.
Fr. Lloyd Baugh, S.J., ran a day-long workshop on March 20 for the two bishops, the priests and seminarians of the Diocese of Civita Castellana, as well as catechists and leaders of other diocesan groups. It was organized around the theme of “The Priest in Cinema: A Long and Valuable Tradition.” The Bishop, an alumnus of biblical studies at the Gregorian, was eloquent in his praise of the Jesuits who taught him, including “un grande canadese,” Rod MacKenzie, as well as of those who now teach his seminarians, all of whom study at the Gregorian.

Archbishop Terrence Prendergast, S.J., was interviewed by the Ottawa Citizen (April 22) and the Catholic News Agency (CNA) (April 23), regarding Ontario Premier Dalton McGuinty’s proposal for a revised sex ed curriculum for Ontario schools which has since been dropped. Toronto Star columnist Rosie DiManno wrote an April 19 column entitled “The difficult Year of the Priest,” in which she starts off the piece with a visit to Our Lady of Lourdes parish in Toronto, and then gets into the pastoral message sent by Toronto Archbishop Collins regarding sex abuse and the Church.

During the mid-year break at the Gregorian in Rome, Fr. Lloyd Baugh, S.J., was invited to do a series of three lectures at Georgetown University, in the context of the "Jesuit Heritage Week" in early February. He spoke on "Jesus on Three Continents," focusing on the three films: Il Vangelo secondo Matteo (Italy), Jésus de Montréal (Canada) and Son of Man (South Africa). He then did a public lecture on "Reinventing Jesus: Political and Cultural Subtexts in the Gospel Films." On his way back to Rome, he paused in England to give a faculty research seminar at the University of Durham: "Jesus Reinvented: Aesthetic and Theological Issues in the Gospel Films," and a lecture, "The African Face of Jesus in Film: Son of Man," which he also presented at the University of Newcastle.
Deacon John Meehan, S.J., was interviewed for the CBC documentary Love, Hate and Propaganda: World War Two for a New Generation which debuted on March 4.

Fr. Jack Costello, S.J., appeared on TVO’s program The Agenda with host Steve Paikin, on January 27. The half-hour interview was called “Religion in the Rubble” and focused on Haiti and questions about faith after natural disasters strike.

The Provincial Superiors of English and French Canada announced the appointment of Fr. Jack Costello as National Director of Jesuit Refugee Service Canada for a three-year period starting January 2010.
Fr. Lloyd Baugh gave a paper entitled, “Mysterium tremendum, medium fascinans: Dio nel cinema,” at the Fifth Annual International Conference “L’Anima nel arte,” [“The Spiritual in Art”], held at the Byzantine Abbey of San Nilo in Grottaferrata (Roma), November 3.
Fr. Lloyd Baugh also has an article published in the current issue of the Gregorian University’s theological/philosophical journal, Gregorianum, entitled “The Search for Meaning, the Struggle to Love: Ang Lee’s Film Brokeback Mountain” [vol. 90, num. 3 (2009), pp. 533-570].

On October 20, Fr. Lloyd Baugh, S.J., gave a paper at Rome’s Universita’ Pontificia Salesiana — “Imaging the Image of God: Theological and Esthetic Strategies in the Jesus Films” — during an Ecumenical Seminar organized by the Salesians’ Faculty of Social Communications, and entitled “Dire Dio nel cinema: Un dialogo interreligioso” [“Narrating God in Film: An Interreligious Dialogue”]. He also moderated the round-table discussion among Muslim, Jewish and Christian scholars and filmmakers that concluded the day-long event.
Fr. Bill Ryan, S.J., will participate in a small international conference, organized by the Jesuit Social Justice Secretariat in Rome and the Jesuit European Office [OCIPE] in Brussels, November 23-26, on the International Economic and Financial Crisis. The participants, Jesuits and associates, are from academia, social justice centres, etc. The crisis will be studied and discerned from the perpectives of social science and the new social encyclical Caritas in Veritate.
The November 15, issue of The Catholic Register features an op-ed piece by Fr. Michael Czerny, S.J., entitled “May we hear the voices of our African brethren,” on page 19.

The October 2 issue of The Catholic Register features an article entitled “Jesuits put vow of poverty into action,” on Provincial Jim Webb, S.J., and Socius Peter Bisson, S.J., and their decision to move to an apartment in St. James Town, one of the poorest Toronto neighbourhoods.
Mauricio Palacio’s essay on migration, “Les murs de la peur,” (The Walls of Fear), published in Aujourd’hui Credo, received an honourable mention in the category “Features (magazine)” of the Canadian Church Press awards for 2009.

The University of Toronto Press has just published “The Triune God: Doctrines,” translated from Fr. Bernard Lonergan’s 1964 Latin work, by Fr. Michael Shields, S.J. and edited by Robert Doran and Daniel Monsour. This is the fifteenth volume of the Collected Works of Bernard Lonergan published so far. It is a companion volume to “The Triune God: Systematics,” which came out in 2007. The two together comprise virtually the entire corpus of Fr. Lonergan’s writings on the Trinity.
The Catholic Register ran a piece by Fr. Michael Czerny, S.J., entitled “Papal encyclical tells us to ‘Think!’ and ‘Love!’” in their August 9-16 edition. The piece tells us how the new encyclical “Caritas in Veritate” might be important for Africans and Canadians.
The August 9 - 26 issue of The Catholic Register also features writer Lisa Petsche’s article “Recognizing God in Nature,” where she talks about a workshop she attended in which Fr. Jim Profit, S.J., spoke about finding God in Creation.

New Faces of Canadian Catholics: The Asians, a new book by Fr. Terence Fay, S.J., was published by Novalis. The book focuses on five of the largest Asian Catholic communities in Canada and how these communities are putting down roots in the Catholic Church and Canadian society.
The Lenten fast of Fr. John McCarthy, S.J., continues to make news. Recently an article about John’s fast and work with the environment was published in the Atlantic Salmon Journal, Summer 2009 issue.
Fr. Philip Shano, S.J., has an article in the latest issue of Review for Religious. The 68.3 issue of 2009 includes an article on the “Communal Examen.”
