Blessing for new Shrine research library

On September 26, the Feast Day of the Canadian Martyrs, a prayer of blessing was said by Archbishop Terry Prendergast. S.J., at the research library of Martyrs’ Shrine.

The opening of the library in its new location marks the third and final phase of the Martyrs’ Hall Education Centre which consists of a museum, the library, and the Shrine’s archives.

The Shrine’s volunteer archivist, Mr. Steven Catlin, has been working on the collection since 1993 and in 2005 the Shrine received a grant from the Trillium Foundation to remodel an existing dormitory and banquet hall into a distinct facility to be used by pilgrims and researchers alike. The archives and library specializes in artifacts and books associated with the 17th century Jesuit mission to the Hurons as well as Jesuit studies in general.

With special thanks to the Director of the Shrine, Fr. Alex Kirsten S.J., the Shrine’s Board of Trustees, the Malliner Charitable Foundation in Edmonton Alberta, and the grounds crew at the Shrine, under the direction of Mr. Greg Piitz, the new Martyrs’ Hall Education Centre will be an institute of evangelization and scholarship.
