A New Way of the Cross
On February 22, 2008 Ottawa-based sculptor Russell Baron's Way of the Cross was installed in the Chapel of the Réné Goupil Jesuit Community (the province infirmary) in Pickering.
Baron's Stations focus a tight aperture on each moment and meditation. Hands, gestures, emotions and physical expressions are very important in these uniquely round Stations.
The bronze format Stations are in the mold of Baron's previous commission for the Basilian Fathers. These Stations were included on an outdoor Way of the Cross on Strawberry Island.
The sculptor's other work in the Infirmary Chapel of René Goupil House includes: the "Easter Vigil" Crucifix, the tabernacle door, and sacramental altar candle.
La Storta Jesuit Community Superior and Director of the Infirmary, Fr. Robert Foliot said of the new Stations: "The mission of Jesuits at Rene Goupil House is to live in prayer and solidarity with Christ suffering, with the Society of Jesus in all its challenges, with the Church in its struggles and with the whole world in its hungers and hurts. We hope that Russell Baron's "Way of the Cross" will assist us in fulfilling our mission."
The blessing of the new Way of the Cross took place on February 23.
