Jesuit Fathers

A Jesuit priest is a man called by God to do the work of the Society of Jesus in companionship with other Jesuits, both brothers and priests, and to bring the sacramental ministry of the Church to that work and beyond.

His priesthood may not find its ordinary expression in regular parish ministry, but rather perhaps within potentially a very wide range of communities whom he may serve as priest; e.g., the faculty and students of a school or college, retreat groups, hostels and refuges for the poor or homeless, a summer camp, patients and staff of a hospital, inmates and staff in a prison, Christian Life Communities, or any other grouping of people who gather to share faith and to celebrate Christ within the ritual life of the Church.

As an ordinary part of his formation, each Jesuit priest receives the formal academic training in both philosophy and theology prescribed by the Church for seminarians. Beyond that he may also follow studies in other academic disciplines according to personal interest and anticipated service in ministry.
